EcoCentres
Sustainability is a major focus for Wells Field
Studies Centre, as well as being a priority on a wider local
scale, through Norfolk County Council and on a national scale,
through the Department of Children, Schools and Families.
Our centre is proud to echo what we teach regarding sustainability in the day-to-day running of the centre. As a result of our efforts we have been awarded the prestigious Eco-Centres Flag by EnCams. We invite all visitors at the centre to join with us in this pursuit and hope that they go away having learned something new. During a stay at the centre visitors may become involved in:
- weighing rubbish and recyclables
- monitoring energy and water use
- examining our Eco-Code
- separating waste
- coming on visits with low-waste packed teas
- undertaking the Eco-Trail
- calculating their 'ecological footprint'
- discussions relating to food supply
- visiting our shop selling fairly traded, recycled and locally made goods
- feeding birds and worms
We are currently in the process of re-applying for a second Eco-Centres award - please have a look on our website and at our Eco-Centres notice board during your stay. We welcome ideas from visitors about how we might become even 'greener'!
There is an equivalent of the Eco-Centres award for schools called Eco-Schools; please ask us for a leaflet if you are interested. Centre staff would be pleased to advise about opportunities that may exist back in school for becoming more sustainable. Norfolk County Council's Environmental and Outdoor Learning Team have a website with lots of useful information to help you embed the governements 'sustainable schools framework which can be found at www.schools.norfolk.gov.uk/go/envedu
