Gates and Grounds Project

In 2002 Wells Field Centre gained 'EcoCentre' status for its achievements in working towards a more sustainable lifestyle with young people in Norfolk. As part of our ongoing work in this area we want to improve the grounds around the Centre. A small steering group has been formed to work with different sections of the local community to achieve this.

The aim was to gather and consult on environmentally and historically inspired design ideas for a new set of entrance gates and railings together with raised bed gardens on a maritime theme. These improvements bound the public right of way, providing amenity and educational value combined with community volunteer opportunities.

A well respected, local artist / blacksmith was given the design for the entrance gates and railings as a result of much involvement from all ages / sexes and backgrounds of the local community, collecting memories of the buildings past use as a school and looking forward to its future in the years to come as well as using ideas from the local environment. The story of the buildings history is told in an interpretive panel made from 'ecofriendly' inks printed on birch wood.
